In all of my teaching, I believe in a strongly research-led approach, with both content and skills emphasising the development in students of an independent voice as historians. As a consequence, and following from my own research practice, all of my courses combine examination of written and material sources. They also highlight to students the importance of understanding current contexts of survival and interpretation as an integral part of exploring the past, whether through collecting histories or historiographical investigation. I have enjoyed in recent years developing BA core skills, or hub, modules that have challenged me to think about the substructures of academic practice in useful and productive ways.
As part of my commitment to on-going personal development in my teaching I have completed a Post-Graduate Certificate in Higher Education and obtained Senior Fellowship of the UK Higher Education Academy (awarded October 2019). I’m delighted that my teaching frequently receives positive feedback from my students, including for my enthusiasm, passion, knowledge and commitment to supporting students to achieve their best. I also respond directly to student feedback when modifying and developing my modules.
