In all of my teaching, I believe in a strongly research-led approach, with both content and skills emphasising the development in students of an independent voice as historians. As a consequence, and following from my own research practice, all of my courses combine examination of written and material sources. They also highlight to students the importance of understanding current contexts of survival and interpretation as an integral part of exploring the past, whether through collecting histories or historiographical investigation. I have enjoyed in recent years developing BA core skills, or hub, modules that have challenged me to think about the substructures of academic practice in useful and productive ways. As part of my commitment to on-going personal development in my teaching I have completed a PGCHE and obtained Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy (awarded December 2016) and I am currently in the process of applying for Senior Fellowship.
